Course Outline

Lessons

We will walk you through the basics of the components of Google Sites that facilitate using the tool as an intranet for document and information sharing. We will introduce you to site templates, pages, page editing, embedding calendars, discussion tools and managing permissions to various components of the site. We will then look specifically at document sharing via Google Sites, exploring how to upload, link and embed documents. Furthermore we will explore the connection between Google Drive and Google Sites and some best practices and suggested approaches for building a document repository using Google Sites.

Why Google Sites?

While Google Sites can have many applications, it is typically used as a department or group intranet site for document and information sharing. It is a tool that will let you create simple websites with ease. While these sites can be designed to be complex and attractive websites, the standard tools create simplistic, functional websites. Therefore the use for an intranet site. They key features that facilitate this are the fact that it is easy to edit the pages and the site through a WYSIWYG editor, it is easy to embed other Google app content, such as calendars and documents, and it is very easy to manage different levels of access to different pages on the sites based on user ID.
