This course is a practical structural design course that contains step-by-step procedures that include instructions that help understand and solve routine building structural problems. The course contains a short introduction to the National Building Code of Canada, NBCC 2005, and then goes into detail on how to calculate the expected environmental and occupational loads on a structure, which includes dead, live, snow, wind, and seismic loads.  A crash summary of the required structural analysis basics that are needed for structural design will be explained.  The course then goes into the design of steel, reinforced concrete structural elements by limit states design according to the Canadian Standard Association CSA codes S16-01 and A23.3-04, respectively.  The connection design of steel members and the design of deep and shallow foundations are also discussed.

Introduce the attendees to the manner in which environmental influences and occupancies are transformed into structural loadings and the manner in which structures resist these loadings. The attendees will learn how to compute loadings, and to design steel and concrete members, including steel connections. The course also includes the design of deep and shallow foundations and aims at exposing the attendees to the practical aspects of design, which are normally gained through practical experience and the work in design offices.   Learning Outcomes
This course will introduce you to the current codes and standards that govern structural design, including the structural provisions of the National Building Code of Canada NBCC 2005. You will also learn:
  • Basic understanding of codes and design methods.
  • Understanding of how to calculate the environmental and occupational loads and their combined effect on a structure.
  • Knowledge on the design of steel tension, compression and bending members.
  • Knowledge on the design of reinforced concrete beams and columns.
  • Knowledge on the design of steel connections.
  • Knowledge on the design of foundations.

        Instructor Ayman Kamel, PhD, PEng
Ayman Kamel has a doctorate degree from the University of Alberta and is a senior Structural Engineer with 18 years of practical and teaching experience. He is currently working for one of the world’s biggest International Engineering companies in their Edmonton office.

In addition to teaching design courses and publishing several technical papers, Dr. Kamel’s experience includes analyzing, designing, and detailing reinforced concrete, structural steel, masonry and wooden structures with combined project costs of over $2B. 

Dr. Kamel gained technical skills from industrial and commercial practical experience together with teaching and research and has hands on experience with various structural analysis and design programs.  Dr. Kamel is also a professional member of many Engineering associations and societies that include APEGGA, American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), Canadian society of Civil Engineers (CSCE), and American society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

If you wish to withdraw from a course, you must advise us, in writing, including the official receipt. Our policies regarding refund are:

More than fifteen business days in advance: a full refund minus $50.00 administration charge.

Fifteen or less business days in advance: a transfer to another course or a credit, valid for one year, to another GIC course can be considered. Credits are transferable within your organization.

If the course has been running for more than 2 weeks, or after the course has started, an 80% credit towards another GIC course may be considered, if notice is received before the start date of the second session. After this time, no refunds or credits will be issued. If a speaker is not available due to unforeseen circumstances, another speaker of equal ability will be substituted.

GIC reserves the right to cancel or change the date or location of its events. GIC's responsibility will, under no circumstances, exceed the amount of the fee collected. GIC is not responsible for the purchase of non-refundable travel arrangements or accommodations or the cancellation/change fees associated with cancelling them.
