- Course Outline
Brownfield redevelopment and remediation is frequently based around risk based assessment to derive suitable standards upon which to prioritize clean-up efforts and to assist in providing a safe site for human use, whether for industrial, commercial, residential or recreational use. Vapour intrusion into buildings has been, and continues to be a sensitive exposure pathway for soil and groundwater contaminants to enter a building and pose potential harm to the users.
There are several approaches available for the modeling of vapour intrusion into buildings, both in Canada, the US and elsewhere. In this course, you will learn the basis behind vapour intrusion assessment, applicable site investigation and data collection requirements, how to use certain models, model sensitivities and the actual and perceived risks associated with vapours.

develop a conceptual idea of the potential for vapour intrusion into a building to occur,
to identify the key receptors of concern
better evaluate the true risks to a building and its occupants from volatile contaminants in the subsurface
assess whether more information is needed to better quantify a vapour intrusion risk and to determine if the site characterization completed is appropriate
