The course will provide engineers and technicians with information for the optimal selection, operation and maintenance of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps as well as positive displacement and dynamic compressors.

Course Outline
After participating in the seminar, you will be able to:

• Gain an awareness of the performance characteristics of the various types of pumps and compressors.
• Increase the reliability of your pumps and compressors after having understood their operational and maintenance aspects.
• Develop an effective maintenance program after becoming familiar with the components of pumps and compressors.
• Improve performance of your pumps and compressors with the increased appreciation of the influence of fluid flow and associated equipment.


Pumps and compressors are essential components in almost all industries in that they are required to meet system demands and operate reliably.   Failure to meet these requirements can have significant production (and hence cost) impacts.
By attending this course you will gain an understanding of the characteristics of various types of pumps and compressors and their components.  The course will provide engineers and technicians with information for the optimal selection, operation and maintenance of centrifugal and positive displacement pumps as well as positive displacement and dynamic compressors.


As part of this course, a workshop will be held on the development of justifiable, cost effective preventive maintenance activities for a pump.  This workshop will show you a method of developing a preventive maintenance program and will enable you to develop a list of preventive maintenance activities (and activity frequencies) that can be applied in your own facility.


To provide an understanding of the fundamentals of the operation and maintenance of various types of rotary and reciprocating pumps and compressors .

Alan Powell
Mr. Alan Powell is a Program Director with EPIC (Educational Program Innovations Center) who has over 30 years experience in the maintenance of industrial facilities.  After graduating with a Master of Science degree in Engineering from the University of Manchester in England, he immigrated to Canada. During his career he has developed maintenance programs, introduced significant maintenance cost saving concepts and managed a process to revise the preventive maintenance program in many large facilities. He has authored and presented several papers on maintenance at national and international conferences.
