Finding Your Way

In business and in life there are multiple ways, almost limitless ways, to achieve success. There are also infinite ways that can take you off in the wrong direction.
Finding your way, the way that will work best for you and best for your business, demands a strategic approach, a calculated approach and a commitment to sometimes challenge cherished assumptions.
Today's business owner must face reality, what's working and what's not. She must be willing to think first, act second and monitor every step of the way. He must continually ask "Am I on the right path?"
Sadly too many well-intentioned business owners are on the wrong path, heading the wrong way and yet continue to work harder, unwittingly distancing themselves from where they truly want to be.
Finding your way demands that you be acutely careful of how you think.
Dr. Roger Birkman back in the 1940's conducted exhaustive research on how leaders lead. He studied how they learn, think, decide and relate to others. In other words how leaders engage in finding their way. His insights are as valid today as they ever were.
He stated: "The reality of life is that your perceptions -- right or wrong -- influence everything else you do. When you get a proper perspective of your perceptions, you may be surprised how many other things fall into place."
More recently John Kenneth Galbraith put it this way: "In the choice between changing one's mind and proving there's no need to do so, most people get busy on the proof."
Even more recent, to firmly nail this point home, Dr. Stephen Covey: "For minor improvements work on behaviors; for quantum improvements work on mindset."
Finding your way is never easy. But it is made infinitely more difficult if we are trying to find the way with a weakened mindset.
Here are a few questions that might help you remain focused while finding your way:
- Why did I go into business for myself?
- How closely does my current reality match my original vision?
- What thought processes might be holding me and my business back?
- What do I hold to be true that might not be so?
- Am I heading toward where I want to go?
In business and in life there are multiple ways, almost limitless ways, to achieve success. While finding your way focus first on how you think and you might be pleasantly surprised how many other things fall into place.
