This course focuses on geotechnical aspects in the analysis, design and construction of landfills.

Course Outline
After participating in this seminar, you will be able to:
  • Gain a solid understanding of the geotechnical issues involved in landfill design and management
  • Carry out preliminary landfill design
  • Review landfill design portfolios and provide technical and practical feedback
  • Become a proficient landfill designer
Description

Waste containment facilities (Landfills) are one of the most commonly used means for waste disposal.  The management of landfill sites is of crucial importance from public health, environmental and regulatory perspectives.  The designer and manager must thoroughly understand the geotechnical issues involved in the design and operation of landfills to protect the environment in the long-term. This course focuses on geotechnical aspects in the analysis, design and construction of landfills. The three-day course includes primarily lectures and case studies. Participants are expected to take part actively in discussions and hand-on exercises, which will enhance the learning process and make it more interesting.  While participants are not expected to be an expert landfill designer at the end of this course, they should have a solid understanding of the geotechnical issues involved in landfill design and be well on the way to become an expert if so desired.

Objective

To study geotechnical aspects of landfill design, implementation, operation, closure and post-closure management.

Who Should Attend

Solid waste managers, environmental and municipal engineers, landfill managers and supervisors, consultants, regulatory personnel, and technical specialists involved in the operation of domestic and industrial landfills.

Special Feature

The course materials include lecture notes and a textbook (Oweis, I.S. and Khera, R.P (1998) Geotechnology of Waste Management, 2nd Edition, PWS Publishing Co., Boston, MA, 472pp.)

Our instructor, Stephen Lamming, was outstanding and a true expert in his field. He was able to complement the technical air monitoring information with practical real life examples which was highly beneficial. He is an excellent communicator and was highly interactive with the course attendees. This course was recommended to me because Stephen Lamming does an outstanding job. I was very impressed with this course and have subsequently recommended it to my colleagues.
