Course Outline

This three day hands-on course introduces students to the primary feature set and interface of Motion. Students will learn how to work with Motion’s real-time design engine, interface fundamentals, particles, blend modes, layer organization, advanced text effects 3D and mulitplane camera.

Day 1

A Taste of Motion
Opening Motion, Interface Overview, Setting a Play Range, Adding Objects, Creating Behaviors, Applying Filters, RAM Previews, Deactivating Behaviors and Filters, Using Particle Simulations, Adding a Third Dimension and Autosaving.

Groups Layering and Blend Modes
Creating an End Title Montage, Understanding Objects, Groups and Layers, Using Blend Modes, and Baking a Composite Section.

The Third Dimension
Going Deep, Understanding Three Dimensions, and Getting Around in the HUD.

Moving in 3D
Using 3D Overlays, Using Multiple Views, Adding Objects in 3D, Working with Lights, Animating the Camera with Behaviors, Creating Camera Animation with Keyframes and Walk Camera, Making the Final Sweep, and Fading the Camera

Day 2

Using Templates and Drop Zones
Using Motion’s Templates, Accessing Template Elements, and Creating Your Own Templates

Round Tripping and Retiming
Sending Clips from Final Cut Pro, Working with Optical Flow, Using Retiming Behaviors, Round Tripping back to Final Cut Pro, Sending Sequences from Final Cut Pro to Motion, Editing in Motion, Creating an Overlay and Loop Point, Sending Audio Clips from Motion to Soundtrack Pro and Using a Motion Project in DVD Studio Pro

Creating Text Effects
Formatting Text, Working with Text Parameters, Saving Text Styles, Applying Text Behaviors, Animating Text on a Path, and Animating Text in 3D

Working with Generators and Particle Emitters
Setting Up the Background, Using Generators, Baking a Group, Working with Preset Particles, and Building a Custom Particle Emitter

Making Animated Patterns with the Replicator
Creating a Pattern with the Replicator, Modifying a Replicator, Animating a Sequence Using the Sequence Replicator Behavior, Replicating Layers in 3D, and Using a Replicator Image as an Image Mask

Keyframing and Parameter Behaviors
Adjusting the Background, Working in the Keyframe Editor, Using New Keyframe-Recording Options, Changing Keyframe Interpolation, using Bezier Curves in the Keyframe Editor, Working with Saved Favorites, Animating a Filter with Keyframes and Using Parameter Behaviors

Performing Basic Painting, Using Customized Brushes, and Creating an Animated Paint Stroke


Keying, Mattes and Shapes
Pulling a Key, Treating the Edges, Creating a Garbage Matte, Rotoscoping with the B-spline Tool and Using a Luma Key

Motion Tracking and Match Moving
Match Moving a Screen Insert, Performing Complex Stabilization and Match Moving, Stabilizing Footage, Manually Adding a Track, Creating a Match Moved Image Mask, Adding Match Moved Client Graphics, and Adding Text

Adding Audio
Adding Audio Tracks, Using Audio Parameter Behaviors, Importing a Second Audio Track, and Animating the Jet Graphics

There is no formal prerequisite for this course other than basic Macintosh OS knowledge.

Cancellation Policy
Cancellations within 120 of course - 40% cancellation fee
Cancellations within 60 days of course - 75% cancellation fee
Cancellations within 30 days of course - 100% cancellation fee

Rebooking to a later class - $250
