This Course is designed to introduce engineers to the powerful engineering tools available in Microsoft Excel. In the first day, the Course will start with an introduction to the excel environment including the concepts of worksheets, workbook and how to link information. Next to this introduction will be using Excel to create and customize different presentable charts. The course attendants will then be introduced to different functions that are built-in the excel environment which are relevant to different engineering disciplines. At the end of the first day, creating and editing simple Macros within excel will be introduced to the course attendants. They will then be shown how to create simple functions that are relevant to their different Engineering disciplines.
In the second day, the course attendants will learn how to use excel as a linear algebra tool. For example, they will learn how to use excel to solve a linear system of equations and how to transpose and invert matrices. Next to this, the students will learn to use the optimization and analysis tools within excel that are relevant to most engineering applications, specifically using “goal seek”, “solver” and “Fourier analysis” tools within excel. Finally, the course attendants will learn how to handle large amount of data and how to lookup values from large tables of data.   Target Audience
The course is intended for engineers, geologists and geophysicists, managers, planners, economists, and technical support staff. Participants are expected to have basic knowledge of computing and wish to advance their knowledge using Microsoft Excel.
Expected Outcome
Participants will be able to effectively and efficiently use Excel for the different daily computations. Each participant will be able to apply the tools learnt on a particular problem related to his/her field. This will be ensured through introducing a wide variety of hands-on exercises.   Learning Goals

Instructor

Dr. Samer Adeeb is an assistant professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta. Dr. Adeeb’s main speciality is numerical analysis for different structural engineering applications. His Journal publications utilize the different engineering tools available within the computer, with Microsoft Excel being one of them. Since he finished his Civil Engineering undergraduate degree in 1999, Dr. Adeeb has been using Microsoft Excel for many of the day to day design and analysis tasks that he has to deal with in his consulting and teaching lines of work. In addition to that, Dr. Adeeb has been using Microsoft Excel as an advanced tool for the analysis and optimization in structural analysis. Dr. Adeeb incorporates teaching excel in his courses that he teaches at the University of Alberta. His undergraduate students are highly appreciative of the engineering tools within Microsoft Excel that Dr. Adeeb introduces to them inside and outside the classrooom.

Cancellation Policy
If you wish to withdraw from a course, you must advise us, in writing, including the official receipt. Our policies regarding refund are:

More than fifteen business days in advance: a full refund minus $50.00 administration charge.

Fifteen or less business days in advance: a transfer to another course or a credit, valid for one year, to another GIC course can be considered. Credits are transferable within your organization.

If the course has been running for more than 2 weeks, or after the course has started, an 80% credit towards another GIC course may be considered, if notice is received before the start date of the second session. After this time, no refunds or credits will be issued. If a speaker is not available due to unforeseen circumstances, another speaker of equal ability will be substituted.

GIC reserves the right to cancel or change the date or location of its events. GIC's responsibility will, under no circumstances, exceed the amount of the fee collected. GIC is not responsible for the purchase of non-refundable travel arrangements or accommodations or the cancellation/change fees associated with cancelling them. Please call to confirm that the course is running before confirming travel arrangements and accommodations.

Refund Policy: Allow up to 30 days for refunds to be processed.
