The course focuses on cost effective technologies with in-depth coverage of bioremediation & site-specific risk assessment (Risk based corrective action, RBCA). Case studies based on real projects are included to reinforce the comprehension of concepts

Course Outline

The environmental condition of property is an important issue in real estate transactions and development.  In view of the environmental liabilities for contaminated soil and groundwater, regulatory non compliance, and buried wastes it is necessary to have the knowledge of practical and proven remediation technologies most often used at contaminated sites. In this two day intensive course, for each technology, the following attributes will be presented: physical-chemical principles, unit processes, applicability to waste types, cost, time to complete, advantages/disadvantages, removal/destruction efficiencies, and current experience data in the USA/Canada.  The course focuses on cost effective technologies with in-depth coverage of bioremediation and site-specific risk assessment (Risk based corrective action, RBCA). Case studies based on real projects are included to reinforce the comprehension of concepts and methodologies. Program Outline Day I

Fate And Transport Of Contaminants
• Physical-Chemical Properties of chemicals of concern, ground water,
  and soil
• Transport and migration in the subsurface
• LNAPL/DNAPL/dissolved contaminants
• Biological and chemical natural attenuation reactions

Soil Remediation Technologies
• Soil vapour extraction (SVE)
• Enhanced SVE
• Air injection/SVE
• Air sparging/SVE
• Directional drilling/SVE
• Dual phase extraction
• Pneumatic and hydraulic fracturing/SVE
• Thermal enhancement/SVE
• Surfactant and solvent flushing
• Low temperature thermal desorption

Day II

Groundwater Remediation
• Hydrogeology primer
• Hydraulic containment
• Granular activated carbon
• Air stripping
• Oxidation/reduction
• Precipitation
• Ion exchange
• Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs)

Bioremediation Of Soil And Groundwater
• Scientific principles of bioremediation
• Kinetics and calculations of bioremediation times
• Natural attenuation (evidence, mechanisms, and enhancements)
• Biofarming
• Biopiles
• Bioreactors (bioslurry)
• Co-metabolism of Chlorinated hydrocarbons
• LNAPL/DNAPL effects

There will be a one-hour lunch break each day in addition to a
refreshment and networking break during each morning and
afternoon session.

After Participating In The Course, You Will Be Able To:
Evaluate and select appropriate remediation technologies for contaminated soil and groundwater.
Define key data requirements and design criteria for remediation technologies.
Plan site assessment and remediation with the appropriate analytical data using the phased approach
Apply others’ experience gained from case studies presented at the course to reinforce the concepts, methodologies and technologies

Our instructor, Stephen Lamming, was outstanding and a true expert in his field. He was able to complement the technical air monitoring information with practical real life examples which was highly beneficial. He is an excellent communicator and was highly interactive with the course attendees. This course was recommended to me because Stephen Lamming does an outstanding job. I was very impressed with this course and have subsequently recommended it to my colleagues.
