Course Outline

After Participating in this Course, You will be Able to:
• Recognize the types of contaminants present in wastewater, apply the conventional chemical, biological and/or physical processes used to remove them, and select the type of treatment equipment required for their removal
• Characterize a wastewater based on flow and contaminant parameters
• Apply the principles and practices of conventional wastewater treatment systems learned at the seminar for the removal of suspended solids and colloids, dissolved and particulate organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus
• Use where beneficial to your projects advanced bioreactors and wastewater treatment processes including fixed film and suspended growth bioreactors, biological nutrient removal, filtration, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, carbon adsorption, oxidization and sludge treatment processes
• Realize the potential for industrial water recovery and water re-use applications


Municipal wastewater treatment needs a suitable combination of techniques and processes to achieve the best results. This seminar is designed to provide the user with a solid understanding of the most important principles and practices of this discipline. The seminar topics include municipal wastewater characterization and treatment, using both established conventional and advanced treatment technologies, including classical settling, secondary treatment, chemical and biological nutrient removal, filtration, (reverse osmosis, ion exchange, carbon adsorption), and disinfection. 


To provide practitioners of wastewater engineering a sound working knowledge of conventional and advanced treatment processes applied in both centralized and decentralized wastewater treatment plants.

Facility/utility engineers, consulting engineers, plant managers, chemical technologists and technicians, plant operating personnel, building systems personnel, environmental managers and protective services personnel who work for a City/ Region/County ,  those responsible for capital equipment procurement, or anyone involved in the wastewater treatment industry requiring state-of-the-art knowledge of wastewater engineering processes and technologies, including reutilization and recycling of treated wastewater.

Wastewater Treatment - Pretreatment and Primary Treatment

• Aeration concepts and types of aerators
• Types of treatment processes: activated sludge treatment, rotating biological contactors and trickling filters, fluidized bed bioreactors

Advanced Wastewater Treatment – Disinfection Processes
