To develop skills essential to cope with the rutting and cracking problems

Course Outline

A full understanding of the considerations taken into account during the design and construction of an asphalt pavement and of the factors that influence the deterioration of asphalt pavement is essential to enable technically and financially feasible decisions to be made regarding the asphalt mix to be used, the maintenance to be done and, when necessary, the extent of restoration work that should be carried out. Participants will receive the information necessary to deal with these challenges. They will examine practical techniques for field evaluation of pavement conditions, review causes and effective remedies of pavement rutting and cracking, and discuss crack treatment, filling and sealing, sealant selection, asphalt mix design, pavement recycling, characteristics of asphalt and their suitability and use of steel slag, polymer or engineered asphalt cements, and other techniques for maintaining a rut‑free and properly sealed surface.

Special Features
The instructor has been selected for his involvement in pavement design, maintenance, evaluation, rehabilitation and replacement techniques. His broad experiences include applications at the municipal, provincial and federal levels. You will receive lecture notes and reference materials.
