Course Outline

Good leadership is critical to individual and organizational success in today's challenging global IT environment. Leaders are needed at every level of an organization and in every discipline €" IT is no exception. Leadership is essential to ensuring that project goals and objectives are set and achieved, and to ensure that a project team remains committed and focused to achieving its deliverables.

This course focuses on developing core leadership skills and behaviours and emphasizes that managers can become leaders if they choose to do so. Throughout the course participants explore and discuss essential leadership concepts and behaviours, and create a plan of how to apply these behaviours in their specific context by developing their own personal leadership development plan.

Participants are then encouraged to share their leadership development plan with their manger and to take additional steps to develop themselves as a leader. Upon completion of the course participants can optionally (at additional charge) be introduced to a professional coach with leadership development expertise to continue working on their personal leadership development plan.

  • Any IT professional preparing for advancement into a leadership role.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • know the relationship between leadership and change management,
  • be able to define and describe essential leadership skills and behaviours including,
  • how and when to give feedback,
  • how and when to involved the team in problem-solving, decision-making and other events that concern the team and team effectiveness,
  • know which leadership style is most effective in various situations and how to shift appropriately to be an effective leader,
  • know the role effective communication plays for a leader,
  • know the importance of the relationship of the leader to the group and how to demonstrate leadership to their group/team/project team etc.
  • know the importance of the relationship of the leader to the individual and how to demonstrate leadership at the one-to-one level with team members,
  • have created a personal leadership development plan.

Course Content

Key learning components of this course include:

  • Principles of leadership €" what is leadership and what are the essential leadership skills and behaviours a leader must know and demonstrate.
  • Understanding my Preferred Leadership Style €" participants gain essential insight into their individual leadership behaviours and preferences, together with a solid understanding of the needs of their team and individuals on the team using the DiSC quadrant behavioural model. The DiSC debrief provides
  • an overview of all 4 DiSC quadrant behavioural styles and related subtypes €" including a general description of goals objectives, fears and motivators related to leadership,
  • detailed insight into your own preferred DiSC leadership style and related behaviour preferences,
  • insight into behavioural priorities and desired outcomes of working with others €" key drivers of influencing others
  • insight into what motivates you as a leader, and what causes you stress
  • understanding how your individual leadership style reacts to, and interacts with, other styles and when to shift your preferred style to be a more effective leader
  • strategies to increase your leadership effectiveness with other styles
  • insight into how to approach building more effective interpersonal relationships as a leader
  • detailed understanding of leading other DiSC styles within the context of goals actions under pressure, and fears
  • how to identify others€(TM) DiSC style
  • Meeting individual and group needs €"the importance of a leader€(TM)s relationship to the individual and the group €" which takes precedence over the other and how to balance the needs of the group with the needs of individual group members
  • Maintaining the team and how to meet the needs of the group to be perceived as an effective leader.
  • Stages of team development and related requirements of the leader
  • Creation of an individual personalized leadership development plan

Prerequisites & Certificates

A basic understanding of teams and team dynamics gained from attendance on a Team Building course or from past experience.

10 business day cancellation policy. if the course is confirmed and the student cancels within 10 days of the course, then they get charged and apply a credit for future courses. If they cancel outside of 10 business days, then there are no charges at all.

I realize that we are constantly dealing with technology, but I still think for a registration fee of almost $3,000, that a hardcover book should be included. I know that the option to print the book on a one-time basis exists.

This course provides an excellent overview and a bit of practice on the various functions of SharePoint 2013. I was disappointed at the number of exceedingly long breaks given after each module. I would have preferred less break time and more content to the course. Having never taken a SharePoint course with another provider, I don't know if this is the norm with all providers of just this one in particular.

I ranked the "Use of Technology" low because for Users who were remote the VM's that were setup were a little wonky. Could be very slow at times and then sometimes they needed to be refreshed to work properly with the lab. In some instances we couldn't follow along as replication would not occur fast enough and we would have our lab cut short (for us remote Users).

The trainer was excellent, very knowledgeable and had a lot of valuable experience to share. The problem was that there were way too many workshops that took too long and interfered with getting the maximum benefit from the instructor and the course.

This was quite informative. It was a great opportunity to have ‘real life’ discussions with certified PMs. The instructor had excellent examples and was able to share his PM experiences with us with concrete examples. In addition, this was a great opportunity to network with private sector/public sector PMs and develop a better appreciation of PM on both sides of the fence. Cheers, CL

As a remote attendee, it appeared the instructor paid attention to the "Attendee" and "Chat" windows only a few times throughout the day, so I was not confident that he would see if I sent a message or raised my hand during the course.

The chairs were not very comfortable and the material contained spelling and grammatical error (a few but still)as well as repetition of words.

The room was excellent on its own - less distraction and no noise around you. There was no direction to the room when I walked in and therefore was not sure if I was heading in the right direction. We were not provided with the direction that there was coffee and fridge on the 3rd floor, and the bathroom floor was dirty.

The course content was interesting; however, the instructor didn't have enough knowledge about Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 Development and wasn't able to answer questions without google search. In the future CTE needs to make sure the instructors have real on-hands experience and are highly trained in the technologies they are supposed be teaching.
