The truly lazy, idle person gets nowhere in business or in life. The perpetually busy doesn't get much further.

Busyness can be powerfully seductive for today's entrepreneur. You go into business for yourself thinking that if you work hard in the early years, stay busy, then you'll reap the rewards later on and be able to take it easy.

But once you are on that treadmill - busy, busy, busy, doing it, doing it, doing it - it is exceedingly difficult to get off.

Before long you can become a slave to the very business that was supposed to set you free.

Habitually "busy-being-busy" can project the illusion of a good work ethic. However, far too frequently it is mere activity not accomplishment.

Henry David Thoreau put it best - quoting the great philosophers can make me seem smarter than I really am so here goes - "It is not enough to be busy. So are the ants. The question is: What are we busy about?"

Consider these questions:

Have you ever described your day at work as "Busy as a one armed wallpaper hanger"?

Do you ever say: "If you want a job doing right you've just got to do it yourself"?

Does the phrase "Working smarter not harder" sound to you like pie in the sky, gobbledygook fantasy, not real-world reality?

Do you ever feel like the vaudeville plate spinner trying to keep too many plates up in the air, all the time worrying about which one will crash to the floor first?

Do you ever wonder why you have to do every darn thing yourself?

Have you ever been too busy driving to take time out to get gas?

If you answered yes to even one of those questions then it might be time for a gut-check: Business Ownership or Busyness Slavery?

The choice might seem obvious and easy. It's not.

In today's hectic, fast-paced world of commerce, competition and complexity far too many business owners are working far too hard making far too little because they are toiling away busy-being-busy.

For spectacular results and bottom line profits it is the business that needs to be busy not the business owner.

Busy businesses (Business Ownership) create enduring value and equity. Busy business owners (Busyness Slavery) create stress, anxiety and burnout.

People will pay a premium to buy busy businesses but no-one will pay a high price to buy busyness slavery.

Here are some tips to help you remain focused and avoid busyness burnout:

- Apply the 80/20 Rule. 80% of your results probably come from 20% of your activities. Identify the 20% and then dedicate at least 2 hours each day exclusively to those high-value high-return tasks - the absolute best use of your time and talents.

- Assign, delegate, diminish or dump the other 80%. Don't major in minor things.

- Proactively schedule time off to reflect, think, review and recharge.

Business Ownership or Busyness Slavery - the choice is yours.

Choose wisely.
